Good news! Got my carb insulator installed. Bad news! My hood doesn’t shut now. Worse news! I think I have a leak in my brake system somewhere. If I step on the brakes they’ll just slowly drop to the floor and they feel weird as shit. Yaaaaaaaay. I’m hoping multiple hard stops just resulted in a pinhole in one of the soft lines.
The screws that were holding the carb on were super loose. The car idles waaay worse after putting this in so I’m assuming I squashed some vacuum leaks and will have to lean it out now that they’re gone.
Seriously though fuck this shit. With my bodywork history I really don’t want to do a god damn hood scoop nor do I have the money for a high-rise intake and intake scoop. Ugh. Luckily it’s forward-hinged so I can technically drive it around like this.

fuck it, take the hood off

not a bad idea honestly.

Straight Roadkill it. Just take the hood off your Jag when it overheats and leave it off.

More room for a blower on top

WHY DID YOU TOUCH IT?!?!
Also, please don’t drive that thing while the brakes aren’t working properly.

Hey, fixed the vacuum leaks :D
Gotta limp it to a buddys house tomorrow so I can take a look at things. I drove it back and forth after putting the spacer on and the brakes were fine so maybe I just boiled the utter shit out of my fluid. Dunno.

Master cylinder dead? If it goes down to the floor while holding it can be that as well. When the seals go bad your fluid level goes down and your brakes get mushy like a GM truck.

check caliiper piston seals. Ive had those go out and leak on me and didnt think of checking them until last

Damn! I have to go back and read up on this.
In the meantime. A primer on proper uses for an Edelbrock/Carter 4bbl carburetor.
1. Wheel chock.
2. I’m flipping the car and it just needs to look pretty.
3. Extra weight in a pile of scrap metal.
They’re the most finicky bastard carbs ever produced.
Sorry for the rant.

Edelbrock’s aren’t finicky per-say, Holley carbs are far worse for being finicky, but when tuned are waaaaaaaay better. Carter AFB/Edelbrock’s just suck. completely and totally. Now the ultimate carb is the Q-jet but there are like 4 people in the world left who know how to tune them correctly.

Finnicky heatsoaking bastards they are. And they don’t do corners.

Yeah both of my Miatas had a bad caliper. I’m just hoping it’s not one of the rears, lol.

Possibly. I’m hoping it’s a softline or one of the front calipers. Master cylinders are $200.

Is the hood clearance issue with or without an air cleaner? If it’s with one, you will want to get the most extreme drop-base one you can to keep it as low as possible. If it’s without even any air cleaner on top, it’ll take some work to close the hood (because modifying the hood is unacceptable... right? I hope?)

With the air cleaner. I fixed it by taking a hammer to the air cleaner.

As long as it still seals to the filter I fully approve of this method as well.

Add a fifth to that list of Q-Jet tuners! That was the most misunderstood and unfairly maligned carb ever produced.
The AFBs are the ones I see at every car show and truly despise. (I think their popularity is a legacy thing. At one time it was the best you could get. Today not so much.) Everyone seems to think they’re ready to run out of the box too. So you wind up with a parade of cars running super rich at idle and part throttle burning the eyes and noses of everyone within a 50' circle.

Thermobog was also unfairly maligned too. But yeah, you can make an old Q-jet scream. Good for me I’m fucking DONE with carburetors. :)
